Can A New Logo Save Walmart?

Have you seen it? Walmart (now spelled without the hyphen) has a new logo and what critics are saying is a push to move the company from a non-echo friendly, big box store reputation to that of it’s competitor, Target. They are taking the hyphen out of their name, going from two words (Wal-Mart) to one word (Walmart) followed by what appears to be a sunburst or asterisk of some sort vs. their current star. Take a look.

And what the hell is up with the “Save better. Live better.” tag line?  Is that the best you could come up with?  I’ve been living better since the ball dropped on the eve of 2008 when I promised myself I would never shop at Walmart again.

Starting to shop there because of a new logo is like buying Spam just because it is in a new container. Spam is Spam.  The same is true for Walmart, hyphenated or not. No thanks.

What are your thoughts?  Like the new logo? Would you buy something simply because of a change in packaging or a re-branding?
